Dear Brother -- Today’s Your First Day As A Real Product Designer
I remember that feeling when I became one a few years ago.
I remember spending weeks preparing and putting together my portfolio. I remember walking into those interviews wondering if the hiring manager would see my potential. I remember questioning my abilities every step of the way and convincing myself to keep moving no matter what.
Here’s the reality, you are far ahead of me now than when I started.
You deserve to be in this role. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
I became a UX designer when the role wasn’t well-known. There wasn’t a degree available when I was an undergrad. I actually thought UX was a coding language!
You’re way ahead of the curve. You graduated in Cognitive Science with an emphasis on Artificial Intelligence and Human-Computer Interaction from UC Santa Cruz. You spent four years learning your craft. If Product Design was a degree, you pretty much have it. On top of that, you learned to program mobile apps during your summers and already designed a mental health app before you graduated. And even after you graduated, you continued learning to be a better designer by taking more classes.
Your dedication is admirable.
Designing isn’t your only job as a product designer.
I know you’re shy. But a big part of your role will involve communication. Here are a few examples:
Interviewing and getting to know your users.
Presenting your designs to stakeholders and team members.
Negotiating design decisions.
Use these opportunities to get better. Communication is a skill as much as design. As you progress in your career, the more communication will be a crucial part of your role.
Learn from those ahead of you and teach those behind you.
As you’ve experienced, getting your first role is challenging. You’ve also learned from some fantastic designers and leaders who helped get you to where you are now.
You’re still at the beginning of your journey. But for aspiring designers, you are far ahead of them. Don’t forget to bring them with you along the way.
You got this!
All the love,
Your sister / Ate
