Startup Write-Up: Loom

Remote work has been steadily on the rise for the last several years. COVID-19 normalized the remote and distributed workforce and put communication and productivity apps such as Zoom, Docusign, and Slack at the forefront of everyone’s lives. Even after COVID, 80% of people expect to work from home at least 3 days per week.

In-person work is largely synchronous, with people interacting in meetings together. Most prominent workplace apps replicated synchronous work experiences. Slack and Zoom are communication meant to happen in near real-time. As workers spread out across time zones there is a growing need for asynchronous work tools that can capture effective communication without getting lost in the shuffle.

Loom is a video communication tool making it easy to create and share asynchronous video recordings and screen shares with others within a private content library. The company was founded in 2016 as a simple way to share videos with your colleagues. Fast forward to May 2021, Loom had grown its revenue by more than 1,100%, and active users have increased 900% to 14 million users across 190 countries since 2020. The company’s traction comes from offering a product helping companies hit their communication goals by transitioning text, audio, and synchronous-only communication to video communication. As remote and work-from-home trends continue, Loom is becoming the company of choice for asynchronous video communication.
